This summer has brought record heat to many parts of the U.S. Most people know that heat can be dangerous and even deadly for their dogs but may not know the best ways to keep these members of their family safe. Here are 5 tips to keep your dog safe and happy to enjoy those long dog days of summer.

Make sure dogs have plenty of shade. You can help to keep outside dogs cool by placing them near shade trees or placing tarps or canopies up where they can play and rest.

Lots of clean water is essential for keeping dogs hydrated and cool. Provide several bowls of clean water and to keep it cool you can add ice cubes or freeze a bowl of water or two. Your dog will love the icy cold water and it will help keep their body cool.

Never leave your dog in a hot car! Hot cars and dogs just don’t mix. Not only is it extremely dangerous and cam quickly turn fatal for your dog it can also be a crime even a felony depending on the severity. Just don’t do it.

Protect those paws. Watch for asphalt, sand and other terrain that can get extremely hot. Dog paws are quite sensitive and can burn easily.

Know the signs of heatstroke. Watch for excessive panting, glazed eyes, unsteadiness or vomiting. If you fear your dog may be overheated, wrap them in a cool wet towel or run cool water over their body. Allow them to sip cool water or lick ice cubes. Contact your vet for immediate assistance which could save the life of your dog.

You may not realize it, but pets are a lot more vulnerable to bad weather incidents and being picked up as an assumed stray than you’d imagine. There are several things you can do to keep your pets safe, out of trouble, and happy at home!

Make sure your pet enclosures are secure and big enough. A pet likes nothing more than free space to move around and being closed up too tightly can be unhealthy. Also, you wouldn’t want a pet that needs to be closed up exploiting a weakness in the enclosure!

If it’s storming outside, don’t forget to bring your pets inside. Some pets may not understand weather the same way that humans do, so it can be quite a scare for them.

Make sure your pets are tagged or collared if they are going to be out of the house. You wouldn’t want someone picking up your pet to call their own. They also run the risk of being taken to the pound if they’re not collared and/or tagged.

Keep your pets healthy! This is a big one. Keeping your pet healthy is one of the most important things you can do. Make sure you keep your pets free of parasites and common diseases. Be positive that your pets’ vaccinations are up-to-date.

Following these simple steps can assure that your pet remains safe and out of harms way. Keeping a safe, healthy environment is very important for your pet!
